Best VR Headset to Watch Movies in 2021

1. GOOVIS Pro | Ultimate Best Movie-Watching VR Headset

best vr headset for movies GOOVIS Pro

In short, Goovis G2 Pro is an ultimate movie watching headset solution to replace home theater, your smartphone, tablet or TV for an unprecedented and immersive 4K 3D cinema-like experience.

It feels like having a huge screen TV on your head and being totally isolated from the surrounding environment. You will enter a new world!

It’s easy to setup, and easy to use with universal connectivity, intuitive controls, 3D projection, and adjustable vision range.

With such a unique adjustable vision range, you can efficiently set your display for your eyesight to an accuracy of +/- 0.33D. No eye strain or headache!

You can also easily watch some 3D movies (if you have) using the 3D switch!

You can wear it for many hours because of its lightweight, long 4.5h battery life and eye strain-free performance (with individual eye adjustments).

And you’re afforded 4K Blu-Ray support as well. Including Blu-Ray 3D!

A great distinction is that it’s NOT necessarily a smartphone-connected VR solution.

I mean you don’t need a smartphone to set it up. So, you won’t be bothered by any calls or email alerts or texts during your precious movie watching experience.

Tech Specs

It uses two high-resolution 0.7-inche AM-OLED Sony 1920 x 1080 micro displays with a PPI of 3147.

Therefore, it has almost 7 times the pixel density of larger M-OLED gears such as iPhone X or best TVs to present you a smoother, clearer and more detailed and incredibly sharp image quality.

The Goovis G2 Pro possesses 12 optical ultra-precision lenses and an FHD virtual giant screen, which is equivalent to a giant 800-inch widescreen viewed from almost 20m.

With an internal storage of 32 GB, you can upload or download all your favorite movies, games and apps.

Also, it comes with supporting storage up to 256 GB thanks to a SD slot and USB mobile storage disk.

It has 5900 mAh polymer Lithium-ion battery enabling about 4.5 h performance, so you can watch 2 or 3 movies with a single charge! Great, isn’t it?

It will use an HDMI interface, so it can easily connect to intelligent devices such as drones, set-top box, Nintendo, Xbox, PS4, PC, smartphones, Goovis control box and regular DVD players.

Weighing only 7.05 oz (200g) with a dimension of 7.3in x 4.3in x 2.2in (185mm x 109mm x 56mm), it is a 6-axis motion-tracking device combining a 3-axis gyroscope and 3-axis accelerometer just to give you an immersive experience.

Pros

Cons

User Experience:

Let’s see what other users on Amazon think about this VR headset and its capabilities.

1) The battery life isn’t great and might barely last for watching 1 movie.
You might also have to reset it a few times while using it.

2) The design isn’t great and can be uncomfortable at times, which is a downer considering this thing costs a whopping $1,000!

3)  The viewing experience itself is quite good.

The resolution is high enough for you not to notice any artifacts.

4) 3D capabilities are a big upside and you’ll really enjoy 3D movies on this headset.

5) The company claims the viewing distance is similar to that of viewing an 800-inch IMAX screen.

This isn’t exactly true, but it really gets the job done.

6) This headset features diopter controls so you won’t have to wear glasses while wearing it.

Expert Opinion:

2. GOOVIS G2 | Immersive Theater Headset on a Lower Budget

best vr headset for movies GOOVIS G2

So, you met the GOOVIS G2 Pro, maybe you like what you saw, but it was a little much for you.

The GOOVIS G2 Pro can basically do everything the GOOVIS G2 can do… and more. But maybe you don’t need the “more.”

And for it’s added cost, you may want a slightly cheaper option that still delivers an incredible experience.

And that could very well make the GOOVIS G2 the best VR headset to watch movies if that’s your line of thinking.

You still are granted the unique adjustable vision range, allowing you to set your display for your eyesight to an accuracy of +/- 0.33D.

Another headset that’s ‘easy on the eyes’.

You can still watch movies in 3D. Though the G2’s Real 3D experience isn’t quite as exquisite as the Pro… it’s still fantastic and gets the job done.

You won’t have Blu-Ray support, nor Blu-Ray 3D for that matter. If Blu-Ray is important to you, then you’ll likely want to wander back to the section of the GOOVIS G2 Pro.

But if you can go without Blu-Ray, you can save a couple hundred bucks with the G2!

One other drawback is that there are a few less video formats that are supported here.

But a bevy of different video formats won’t have you feeling limited at all. The G2 is still a versatile VR Headset with a lot of details similar to the Pro.

Tech Specs

The GOOVIS G2 also uses two high-resolution 0.7-inch AM-OLED Sony micro displays with stunning resolutions of 1920 x 1080.

The OLED is going to produce stunning visuals on your screen. Whether it’s the vivid colors in lively animated films or the deep blacks in space… the G2 will have you going from stellar to ‘Interstellar’.

And yes, it has around 7 times the pixel density of larger OLED screens so not only are the colors in your picture going to possess lovely hue, you’re also afforded beautiful and crisp image quality.

And the display for both GOOVIS products is said to be the equivalent to watching a movie on an 800-inch wide screen viewed from 20 meters away.

No need to drive to the movie theater, find a parking spot, and pick a seat on the chart. Just pop some popcorn and your movie theater is read to be popped comfortably right on your head!

Speaking of comfortable, this headset also only weighs 200 grams. It’s quite small and as you can tell, quite light.

It’s made for you to not know that it’s there. And at such a light weight, you’ll easily forget it’s there. Wear it for hours with no problems.

Which brings us to the fact that it includes a Lithium-ion battery which can give you about four and a half hours of battery life!

So, after you watch Interstellar you can even watch another Nolan movie. Or watch three classic comedies back to back to back… all on one battery!

The GOOVIS G2 lets you have your own mini-marathons, if you wish.

Pros

Cons

User Experience:

Now we’ll see who else on Amazon has purchased this VR headset to watch movies and what they think of it.

1) This is a great device if you can’t afford or have the place to buy a TV.

This way you can enjoy watching movies and shows anywhere, even in your car.

2) This is a lightweight device and won’t put too much pressure on your nose.

However, there’s no support for exFat files.

3) The packaging wasn’t great.

The wires were folded and there was no shrink wrapping around the package.

4) Software and firmware updates were, unfortunately, a pain in the butt and we finally gave up.

5) Despite everything, the picture quality is really good and won’t disappoint when consuming content.

6) You need to understand, this is not a VR headset.

It only has a 60-degree field of view which is like half the standard FOV in VR headsets.

There’s also no such thing as head tracking or degree of freedom.

It’s just a personal monitor strapped onto your head.

3. Oculus Quest | Best Overall Standalone Movie VR Headset

best vr headset for watching movies Oculus Quest

The Oculus Quest is the latest VR headset from the Oculus brand (owned by Facebook). This is the fourth VR headset released by Oculus.

You will get a completely stand-alone experience as it has a built-in screen, graphics processor, and embedded storage.

Watching movies on the Oculus Quest is easy when accessed via your Android smartphone.

Simply navigate to the Quest app and choose your next cinematic adventure.

Keep in mind the device is known to be a tad heavy around the nose piece, so for extended viewing of 1 hour or more, you may feel uncomfortable on your face.

I highly recommend taking small breaks every 30 minutes to give your face a time to adjust to the weight and immersive experience.

Overall, the Quest weighs about 571 grams. Not as light as the models from GOOVIS, though not much comes close to them. But this is fit snugly in the middle of this entire list when it comes to overall weight.

The Oculus Quest is my personal recommendation for watching movies on a VR Headset.

It has a great set of features and is future-proofed for new technologies coming out and beyond by the Oculus brand.

Tech Specs

Everything you need to experience a phenomenal movie watching experience on the Oculus Quest is included in the unit out of the box.

It touts a full 6DOF (6 degrees of freedom) experience that is the first in class to be wireless.

The Quest is powered by a Snapdragon 835 graphics processor, and a crisp 2880 x 1660 OLED display will make action movies and animated superhero come to life with impressive and striking colors.

While the 72-Hz refresh rate isn’t something to write home to mom about, it’s perfectly in-line with a VR headset at this price point.

Given the graphics intensity of VR content, you will not experience any drag time with this unit.

While the Oculus Quest was primarily designed as a gaming headset, it has some impressive features that make it a powerhouse for watching movies. The screen provides deeper blacks and high resolution sharpness.

Digging into the Oculus Store you will find an array of 360 video apps from the likes of National Geographic and the BBC.

For watching movies on the Oculus Quest headset, I highly recommend using the Bigscreen app, which will closely replicate the in-theater movie watching experience.

Audio Specs

The audio experience on the Oculus Quest is is both embedded into the unit and flexible for BYOA (Bring Your Own Audio).

While the integrated audio is a useful feature, I highly recommend using a third-party 3.5mm set of headphones.

Using Oculus Link, you can also use your Oculus Quest with a PC. This gives you access to a wider variety of PC-based Oculus Rift library.

The included Oculus Touch controller will immerse you into all of the realistic VR experiences that the Oculus platform has to offer.

If your sole purpose is watching movies on a VR headset, the Quest is an expensive option.

If you can afford a premium movie watching experience, you will be blown away with the Oculus Quest as it offers the best experience for the current line-up of VR headsets.

Battery Life

The battery life on the Oculus Quest is approximately 2-3 hours per full charge. This means that it will last for a standard 2-hour film viewing experience.

Even the longest of movies should be able to be viewed on one charge, with of course, a few rare exceptions.

In case you forget to fully charge the unit before watching a movie, you can charge the headset while it is in use.

Features and Benefits

  • The Oculus Quest is a stand-alone device with no wires or power cords attached, which will give you 6DOF while watching movies.

  • The integrated graphics processor is powerful and future-proofed for at least the next 24 months.

  • The Oculus Store offers a variety of 3D and VR content to choose from, so you won’t be at a loss for watching movies and television shows with this unit.

  • This VR Headset has integrated audio, but most reviews state that it can and should be enhanced with your own 3.5mm headphones.

  • Oculus Link allows you to connect this device to your PC for gaming and other VR-related applications, which is helpful for watching non-VR movies.

  • This is the 4th headset released from Oculus on May 19th 2019, so it is the newest iteration on the market.

Pros

Cons

User Experience:

Want to hear what other Amazon users have to say about this movie-watching VR headset?

Here you go!

1) The headset stays firmly on the head thanks to the high-quality head strap.

It’s also very light so it won’t hurt your head.

2) It’s a truly stand-alone device, meaning you won’t need a PC to play games on this thing.

3) It might be a little expensive.

You get some free games with the device, but you’ll have to pay for most of the games.

4) This device doesn’t have the strongest hardware.

So don’t expect it to run games on high resolutions and high refresh rates.

5) It has a built-in headphone jack.

If you want to be immersed while playing, you’ll use it a lot!

6) Looking at the device’s lenses is like staring at an old CRT screen from 50 years ago.

Your eyes will get irritated after a short period and you’ll have to take a break.

Expert Opinion:

4. Oculus Go | Best for Watching 3D Videos

best vr headset for watching movies Oculus Go

The Oculus Go is lower-cost option coming from Oculus (owned by Facebook).

If you are strictly looking for a VR headset to watching movies and videos, without a gaming experience, this is the choice for you.

The Oculus Go was essentially an older version of the Oculus Quest as it was released to the market over a year earlier.

In the fast-paced VR world that is like 5 years ago. A great selling point is that it costs about half as much as the Quest but still has the core features that make it a great option for watching movies.

If you’re dead set of a social movie watching experience, then the Oculus Go is NOT for you.

It is a true standalone VR headset and does not have the available group experience option that comes with the Quest and other VR options.

Given the low price of the Go and the fact it is an older model, there will be some trade-offs to consider.

Despite its lack of a social viewing experience, the Oculus Go touts the “littlest big screen” with crystal clear optics and 3D graphics that make you feel like you are in your own personal theater.

Reviewers often state that the “screen door effect” common among earlier VR headsets is less apparent in the Go. It has a higher level of detail due to a higher pixel density per eye.

This is thanks to the LCD screen Oculus used on the Go. Along with more pixel density, you’ll also get brighter, cleaner whites in your future with this headset.

Above all, the 75Hz screen gives you less of a “sickness” feeling when turning your head.

Tech Specs

The Oculus Go boasts a not-to-shabby Snapdragon 821 processor, while provided a decent 1280 x 1440 viewing resolution.

While the Quest has eclipsed these specs, the Go is still impressive when compared to the amount of viewing content available.

Speaking of content, you will find a massive amount of films and videos to watch coming from high-end studios and indie producers.

An impressive array of apps is included from Netflix, Hulu, National Geographic, YouTube, and the Facebook Video.

The Oculus Go is lighter than the Quest at about 468 grams. And it’s designed with breathable fabrics and injection foam molding providing you with a comfortable and ergonomic VR Headset.

Audio Specs

Like the Oculus Quest you have the option of built-in speakers that provide a decent surround sound experience but you also have the option of adding your own headphones via the 3.5mm audio jack.

When I compared the Quest to the Go in terms of audio, they were about the same.

Still, if you are a true connoisseur of watching proper movie soundtracks, Bring Your Own Audio (BYOA) in this case headphones.

Battery Life:

My only gripe with the Oculus Go is the short battery life.

As mentioned before, there will be trade-offs when purchasing a sub-$200 VR headset.

For a full movie-viewing experience, you will be lucky if the Go battery life last a full 2 hours.

Make sure you are fully charged up before starting you movie and you should be good to go.

Should you want to watch movies back to back and binge watch, you will have to take a break for recharging your battery.

Keep in mind watching 3D content will tax the battery life more than your standard VR immersive video or watching normal videos and movies.

However, let’s say you are the type of person who just wants to watch one movie before bed. Perhaps, you’re someone who prefers comedies… typically movies on the shorter end of the spectrum of length.

Well, then the battery of the Oculus Go is enough for you! And if you’re looking to save some money, thi might be your best option.

Features and Benefits

  • The low cost makes this unit a great option for movie watching and videos apps including 3D content.

  • The Oculus Go can connect to the Bigscreen app for a true cinema experience.

  • The picture quality of the Oculus Go is on par with other models reviewed like the Lenovo, VIVE, Rift, and others at a much lower price point.

  • Popular apps are available from Netflix, Hulu, HBO, Showtime, and Facebook 3D Video and Image Software.

  • The included controller is very smooth and effortless. Navigating to your favorite app and to far-off lands will be seamless.

  • The Oculus Go has no reported overheating issues so you can go a long time without having to put it in your freezer.

Pros

Cons

User Experience:

Let’s take a look at other Amazon users’ opinions on this VR headset.

1) This headset has a 75hz refresh rate which reduces the chance of you getting motion sick.

It also features a relatively high pixel density and also less Screen Door effect.

2) The controllers are easy to use and also very satisfying.

The speaker quality was much higher than expected.

3) If you’re expecting resolution on par with PC VR headsets, don’t go for this device.

This is not clearly meant for that.

4) The degree of freedom on this headset is clearly lower than full-fledged VR headsets.

Still, it’s not a big deal if all you wanna do with it is to watch videos and movies.

5) The high refresh rate screen is very cool and shows everything smoothly.

However, playing H.265 HEVC videos can be very choppy and laggy.

Stick to playing H.264 videos.

6) You don’t need a phone to set the device up.

The minimal design was to our liking.

It even has a Netflix app on it!

Expert Opinion:

5. HTC VIVE Pro | Best for Watching Normal Movies

best vr headset for movies HTC VIVE Pro

The HTC Vive Pro headset was the first VR headset released from HTC.

It has a really cool design that is straight out of the movie “The Matrix” and displays a prominent HTC logo.

It’s definitely the most stylish VR headset if you are one to lean heavily on appearances.

Tech Specs

The HTC Vive Pro is not a standalone headset but instead needs to be tethered to a fairly high-powered graphics PC to work.

There are limits to this if you only own a smartphone or if your gaming machine is running older or inferior specs.

Still it gives you a resolution of 2880 x 1600 (or 1440 x 1600 per eye) and a higher refresh rate of 90 Hz.

These will provide you sharp images to view with fairly low latency.

So, the average person won’t have to worry about motion sickness during this crystal-clear experience.

You also see an extra-wide 110-degree FOV (field of view) along with head tracking technology.

This means you can explore any VR environment which is a must-have when watching a VR movie.

If you’re only purchasing a VR headset to watch movies, then the HTC Vive Pro may be more cost prohibitive compared to other models mentioned here.

Despite being on the market for almost 2 years as of this writing, the HTC Vive Pro will still set you back a whopping ~ $800, more than double similar models.

Since this model launched the HTC Vive Cosmos has launched as well.

There is a price drop when taking a look at the Cosmos, which we will do next. So, if you’re on a bit of a budget, that may be the route for you.

One detail to mention that the HTC Vive Pro touts, is its excellent OLED display.

You often times will be paying extra money for OLED as it gives you the benefit of true blacks and vivid colors.

Think if you watch a movie like Avatar… you want those colors to be pop, don’t you? Well, the OLED on the Pro won’t dull the senses, it delivers a high-quality experience!

To run the HTC Vive Pro headset for watching movies you need a minimum Intel Core i5-4590 or AMD FX 8350 processor, an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 or AMD Radeon RX 480 graphics card with at least 4GB RAM and Windows 8.1 or above.

Though, this isn’t nearly the lightest headset on the list, it weighs about 550 grams, so it isn’t the heaviest either.

A noticeable difference between the Pro and, say, the models from GOOVIS.

But the HTC Vive Pro has been ergonomically designed to fit you comfortably for long periods of time.

Audio Specs

The immersive experience with the HTC Vive Pro is displayed here with high-impedance audio that offers 3D spatial sound.

Here, you will find dual speakers that provide noise-canceling experience, which is a selling point of this unit when compared to other PC-tethered headsets.

You won’t be at a loss watching your favorite action movie like “Blade 2” or “Black Hawk Down” with this headset.

You’ll swear you hear bullets and blades, whizzing and swinging right by your ears!

Battery Life

Since the Vive is a PC-based VR headset, there is no battery life to review.

You must tether your Vive VR headset to watch movies and the PC will power the headset.

Unlike the Oculus Quest and others, which are stand-alone headsets, you will need a compatible PC to power the HTC Vive Pro.

Features and Benefits

  • The dimple design on this model is really futuristic and gives it a nice look.

  • If you run the required PC specs, then the HTC Vive Pro provides you with one of the best experiences for watching movies.

  • This unit is definitely a high-end device and is engineered with crisp visual fidelity for watching movies.

Pros

Cons

User Experience:

Let’s take a look at what Amazon users think about their purchase of this VR headset.

1) It’s definitely better and more capable than the original, but also MASSIVELY more expensive.

If you’re not one for its advanced capabilities, you can just buy the original.

2) This device was a huge upgrade over the original one, but after a month, the 5-star rating went down to 1 star.

Out of nowhere, the audio and picture now just go out randomly and it’s unusable.

3) The use of free trial months of their free games catalog is tricky.

They seem to want to trick you into installing their own store which I don’t appreciate.

4) It’s an incredibly comfortable headset that sits very well on your head.

The picture quality is also fantastic.

5) I’m pretty much stuck in the matrix now.

No going back to real life for me!

6) Base station cubes stopped working after 5 hours.

It just sits there now with a blinking red light.

Support says it’s a hardware problem and I should send it back to them for a fix using my own money.

Expert Opinion:

6. HTC VIVE Cosmos | Best LCD Option to Watch Normal Movies

best vr headset for movies HTC VIVE Cosmos

As mentioned, we would next review the HTC VIVE Cosmos. This is another great option from the same brand.

Many similarities between this VR Headset and the Pro, but also a few differences.

The first difference to point out is that the Cosmos costs about $700.

As we get into the specs on this headset, the drop of about $200 from the Pro to the Cosmos may interest you as this is still a quality headset but at a noticeably cheaper price.

Tech Specs

The HTC Vive Cosmos is also a tethered headset. You’ll need an Intel Core i5-4590 or AMD FX 8350 processor, an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 or AMD Radeon RX 480 graphics card with at least 4GB RAM and Windows 8.1 or above… just like the Pro.

Not a fan of being tethered during this experience?

Well, you can also get a wireless adapter and cut the cords!

The resolution on the Cosmos, at 2880 x 1700 (or 1440 x 1700 per eye) is actually slightly better than the Pro.

Yes, this means excellent image detail. Clear, crisp images to make you feel like you are there and James Bond is staring you down from just feet away!

You get the same 90Hz refresh rate for low latency.

And the same wide field of view of 110 degrees.

But another difference is the display, the Cosmos uses LCD.

Now, this does mean more subpixels and less distance between pixels, so the screen is filled more densely.

Less possible screen door effect and bright whites. But the blacks and colors won’t pop or look as true as they would with OLED.

Consider which you’d prefer and if ~ $200 is a big deciding factor for you one way or another.

Many people love the cinema-like quality OLED provides. Then again, if the content you watch is somewhat dark… or your eyes aren’t the best… maybe you want an LCD to brighten things up for you.

Another slight difference between the two, the Cosmos is a bit lighter at 470 grams.

Again, not the lightest option, but for some people every gram counts. And though this is many grams heavier than the headsets from GOOVIS, it’s also 80 grams lighter than the Pro.

Comfortable fit and ergonomic design allows the Cosmos to slip on and off your head with ease… even if you wear glasses!

And if you need a break from virtual reality and need to jump back into reality for a second… the flip-up goggles get you there instantly!

Audio Specs

You’ll be getting 3D spatial sound with the Cosmos as well. Form-fitting headphones are built right in and pop right on over your ears.

Cancelling out noises from the outside world and providing high-quality audio from within, will allow you to have interruption-free movie marathons of say, Leonardo DiCaprio’s work.

You’ll be immersed so deep into the experience; you’ll wonder what level of Inception you are even in.

Battery Life

Just like the Pro, the Cosmos is PC-based, so battery life isn’t a worry.

You must tether the headset to watch movies and the PC will power the headset.

Unlike the Oculus Quest, Oculus Go, and others, which are stand-alone headsets, this option requires you to have a compatible PC to power your experience.

Features and Benefits

  • This is another headset with a futuristic look.

  • If you run the required PC specs, then the HTC Vive Cosmos provides you with an excellent movie-watching experience.

  • Crisp image quality from a high-end device but at a price that isn’t too high.

Pros

Cons

User Experience:

Here we’ll take a look at other Amazon users’ opinions on their purchase.

1) Very very disappointed with this headset.

I can NOT recommend this headset to anyone.

While it has a nice build quality and controllers, it suffers from serious censor issues that keep saying there’s not enough light in the room.

You get errors all the time.

2) Tracking is inconsistent and unreliable.

This is not good for a $700 device such as this one.

3) There have been many updates since I purchased this,

It runs the games smoothly.

4) The controllers and the halo style headband can take some getting used to, but the headset requires a really bright room, or else, it won’t work.

5) The display is wobbly and doesn’t sit firmly in front of your eyes.

You randomly lose traction controls.

6) It’s been only 1 day but so far, I don’t like it.

The controllers feel so unnatural to use.

They’re not bad, they’re just weird.

Expert Opinion:

best vr headset for watching movies Lenovo Mirage Solo

The Lenovo Mirage Solo is a stand-alone VR headset that uses a proprietary WorldSense technology that allows you to naturally explore the virtual world, free of external sensors.

It has a comfortable design, gives you powerful specs, and allows you to access high quality VR movie experiences.

Tech Specs:

The Lenovo Mirage Solo is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 mobile VR platform, same as the Oculus Quest.

It offers you 6DOF (6 degrees of freedom), 3D audio, and up to 4k resolution.

This is a powerful VR headset to watch movies.

No need for wires, PC’s, or controllers when using the Lenovo Mirage Solo.

The interactive power of WorldSense technology means you can dodge flying objects, bob and weave through bad guy punches, and duck your head from flying meteorites.

This is movie watching on steroids for any movie aficionado.

The QHD display and wide FOV give the 75hz processor a nice visual experience when watching movies.

Audio Specs:

Since the Lenovo Mirage Solo does not come with integrated audio, it does offer a 3.5mm headphone jack on the side of the device.

It also includes an exclusive pair of earbuds in the box, which have a cable just long enough to reach the headset and your ears so there is no slack.

They are pretty decent as far as quality, but they do not have any noise-canceling properties and you are better off BYOD (bring your own device) when watching movies with this headset.

Battery Life:

Built into the Lenovo Mirage Solo VR headset is a 4,000 mAh battery.

When combined with the Snapdragon 835 processor running VR movies, it works out pretty well.

You can realistically watch a 2-hour movie before the battery runs out.

Features and Benefits:

  • Google’s WorldSense is cutting-edge technology and will be appropriate for watching movies.

  • Using Google’s Daydream VR platform is very impressive and the layout is simple but effective.

  • The processor of the Lenovo Mirage Solo is on par with the Oculus Quest and depending on what movies you want to watch may be a better choice because of the WorldSense tech.

  • A true immersive experience for watching movies like Blade Runner, although you will need to set up sensors around your room to take advantage of this because everything is built into the headset.

Pros

Cons

User Experience:

Here you can see what other users on Amazon think about this VR headset.

1) Mirage Solo is the perfect VR headset for me and strikes a balance between expensive PC-based VR headsets to cheap cardboard phone-based VR experience.

The resolution is better than many headsets out there and the design is also beautiful.

2) There’s a super limited number of apps that don’t even properly work.

Since the Google Daydream app is dead, you won’t really be getting much out of this.

3) This headset has many advantages over typical phone-based R headsets.

The picture quality is good and some apps are amusing.

4) The battery can last for almost half a day.

This is great if you binge-watch shows and videos on the weekend.

5) Mirage is superior to Oculus Go in every way.

ith Go you can see individual pixels on the screen and it also has a low build quality.

These aren’t an issue with Mirage Solo.

6) Well done Lenovo.

This is a solid product!

Expert Opinion:

8. Google Daydream View | Best for Watching VR Movies on Android

best vr headset for watching movies Google Daydream View

If you don’t own the newest Samsung smartphone but want to experience the world of watching VR movies, I highly recommend looking at the Google Daydream View.

It is very affordable and you will only need to download the appropriate app to start viewing immersive VR content.

Tech Specs:

The quality of viewing will come down to the screen resolution of the smartphone you are using.

Do not expect the same video quality that you will get from a console or PC-connected VR headset, especially when watching movies.

The best aspect is the ever-growing collection of VR-ready movies and content available on the Google Daydream platform. Concert, sports, and especially movies come in full 360 degree panoramic view.

Audio Specs:

The audio when using with Google Daydream View will again come from your smartphone device.

I recommend using a Bluetooth enabled headphone setup so you get the highest quality audio experience without needing a wired connection.

Battery Life:

Using a Daydream app takes a heavy toll on your smartphone battery.

Cruising through virtual worlds drains your battery pretty quickly.

Luckily from within the Dream’s settings screen you can see your existing battery life.

Unfortunately what is more frustrating is the Google Daydream View controller.

There is no visible recognition of the Daydream controller in the Daydream app.

So while you can keep tabs on your smartphones battery life, you won’t be able to judge the controllers battery life. You will only be notified when the controllers battery life is critically low.

Features and Benefits:

  • BYOD – bring your own device, including iOS devices running the Daydream app.

  • The 3D movie environment looks smooth and realistic.

  • The Google Daydream View has an excellent controller that makes operating the headset easy and quick when searching for your next VR movie experience.

  • This VR headset is future-proofed for the next 1.5 to 2 years at least based on Google’s current release schedule and the innovation of new VR movie apps hitting the market.

  • The Google Daydream View is durable and made from soft, breathable fabric so it stay comfortable while you’re watching movies for an extended amount of time.

Pros

Cons

User Experience:

Many users on Amazon have purchased this VR headset to watch movies.

Let’s hear what they have to say about it.

1) This headset is useless outside the Google Daydream app, which is dead!

Even if you get the app to work, the free content and games are all of the terrible quality.

2) Using the headset is pretty simple and straightforward.

It works well with Pixel phones and once you stick your phone in there, it’s ready to use.

3) Daydream is officially going away, so it’s kind of difficult to recommend this to anyone.

4) You also can’t really take their word on the supported phone models and this device might wind up being useless to you.

5) It’s not a bad headset overall.

But the seller did not ship all the additional parts with it.

You also can’t really get any replacement parts for this thing.

5) The head strap only covers the sides of your head.

There’s a reason other brands have a third brand that crosses the top of your head.

Without the third band, the weight of the phone keeps pulling the headset down and off your face.

6) It’s the only one I could find that worked with my Pixel 3 XL

It’s not real VR, but it’s fun for first-time users.

Expert Opinion:

9. Google Cardboard | Best Budget Movie VR Headset

best vr headset for movies Google Cardboard

One of the cheapest entries into watching VR movies is the Google Cardboard.

It is powered by a smartphone and a fordable cutout of heavy-duty cardboard.

You can enjoy VR movies on this device and your only limitation is the quality of your smartphone screen.

Get it, fold it, and enter the world of VR movie watching.

Tech Specs:

As a VR headset the quality of image will come down to your smartphone screen resolution.

The hardware here is literally made of cardboard, so don’t expect it to stand up to more durable plastic and polymer options.

Both Android and iOS apps are available for the Google Cardboard.

You will have a full range of apps including Cardboard Camera, YouTube, and the official Cardboard app that includes a number of immersive demos.

Audio Specs:

The audio, like all smartphone VR headsets, will be up to you to provide.

As I recommended earlier, you should try to use a Bluetooth headset device with your smartphone.

Battery Life:

Watching VR movies on the Google Cardboard will drain your smartphone battery faster than normal use.

With that in mind, I recommend putting your phone on airplane mode when viewing VR movies so that network activities don’t drain your battery in addition to your VR movie-viewing activities.

Also, make sure you download your VR movies before viewing them on the Google Cardboard so when you view them even when you are offline, you conserve battery life.

Features and Benefits:

  • The lowest-cost VR headset for watching movies on our list. At only $15 you can get started for almost nothing.

  • The Google Cardboard will work with you iPhone so you can still enjoy movies and VR content for an affordable entry level amount.

  • Get it, fold it, and begin your VR movie watching journey. You will get a more personal feel by building your own Google Cardboard so you will feel more attached to the device.

Pros

Cons

User Experience:

Now let’s hear what the users of Amazon Google Cardboard think about it.

1) This is no super-advanced tech device that was designed by the military or anything.

This is basically a toy that relies on a simple trick to deliver a mind-blowing experience for those who’ve never used VR before.

2) It doesn’t cost much, but you still don’t get much for the money.
At least the images weren’t blurry.

3) You might think 10 bucks isn’t much just to enjoy some simple VR content and it would be true, except, it’s not!
It’s just a piece of cardboard that doesn’t work.

4) It’s asking for a barcode which is nowhere to be found.
You can’t select anything in the headset unless you’re OK with removing the phone, tapping the button, and then putting it back, every time you want to select something.

5) The picture is always blurry.

Can’t get the picture to be clear no matter how much I tinker with it.

6) If you’ve never used VR before, this can be a fun experience, for 10 minutes.

If you already have a real headset, don’t waste your 10 bucks.

Just go get a sandwich instead.

Expert Opinion:

10. Oculus Rift S | Best Movie VR Headset for PC

best vr headset for watching movies Oculus Rift S

The Oculus Rift S is the latest VR headset launched under the Oculus Rift line that was produced in conjunction with Lenovo.

When you think of “Virtual Reality”, you think of the Rift S.

The first thing out of the box I noticed after testing other Oculus VR headsets was that it doesn’t utilize the T-shaped strap that goes across your head like Bane from Batman fame.

Instead it has an adjustable “halo” that sits on the top of your head.

I found this to be so much more comfortable than other Oculus designs and if you want to watch movies for an extended period of time, you’ll love the feel of the Oculus Rift S.

Tech Specs

At this price point the Oculus Rift S does not disappoint.

It features a combined resolution of 2560 x 1440 with a nice 80 Hz refresh rate.

That refresh rate is better than both the other Oculus options, so latency will be kept lower and motion sickness will be kept at bay.

It features a combined resolution of 2560 x 1440 with a super 80 Hz refresh rate.

The screen resolution is just a tad lower than it’s competitors Oculus Quest and the much more expensive HTC Vive Pro.

Some reviewers noted that the LCD felt like a downgrade from the present 2019 VR headsets that come with brighter OLED screens, but I felt that this was not a downside to using the unit from watching movies in general.

A huge advantage to using the Rift S compared to others is you get instant access to the Oculus Rift marketplace for VR movies and games.

The experiences are immersive and have been developed over the last few years, so you’re getting the most cutting-edge virtual reality technologies.

Long story short, you’re never going to run out of movies or videos to watch with the Rift S.

The downside of the Oculus Rift S is that it’s only a good purchase if you already have a PC with the required specs.

You must have at least a GeForce GTX 1060 or a Radeon RX480 graphics card in your machine.

Not too bad, but also not simple in terms of hardware setup.

The Oculus Rift S is an excellent tethered VR headset for watching movies.

As with every headset in our list, there are trade-offs to be had.

If you don’t mind being connected to your PC and you have the required specs, then this unit is highly recommended.

Audio Specs

It’s important to note that the Oculus Rift S comes with the removal of on-ear headphones in favor of open-air embedded speakers in the aforementioned head strap.

Many reviews I read for this review complained about the audio quality of these speakers.

Although Oculus stated they will take the negative feedback and look to improve the design on future models, you will be stuck with an inferior audio setup on this unit out of the box.

Like all VR headsets for watching movies, the Rift S has the standard 3.5mm audio jack, which allows you to BYOA (bring your own audio) in this case a good set of surround sound headphones.

If you can get past the embedded speakers and bring your own preferred audio, this will not be an issue.

Battery Life

Because the Oculus Rift S requires a PC and tethered connection, you won’t need to fuss with charging the battery during your movie watching experience.

This is a bonus in my opinion compared to the other VR headsets on this list.

If you finish one movie and have the desire to pop another one right in… there’s no worrying about battery life. Just choose and go!

Features and Benefits

  • Although you must be tethered to your PC, it does not need any complicated external sensors.

  • Comes with two separate remote controllers so navigating through the Rift marketplace and menus are smooth and quick.

  • Watching movies will be much more comfortable with the lack of head strap.

Pros

Cons

User Experience:

Here’s what other users on Amazon think about this VR headset.

1) It provides you with a really immersive experience.
Still, if you just want something to watch movies and videos with, just buy the Oculus Go and save some money.

2) The screen is amazing when it comes to showing deep blacks.
But the red color looks weird on it.
The tracking is really good, but you can also get Quest which has good enough of a tracking system.

3) This came out at the same time as Quest.
Somehow despite costing more, Rift S actually doesn’t have features like IPS adjustment and a high resolution.

4) Oculus headsets only work with Facebook accounts.

If something happens to your account, you’ll also lose your VR headset.

Not a fan.

5) It needs a DisplayPort or mini-DisplayPort to work.

If your laptop or PC doesn’t have this port, DON’T buy it!

6) The inside-out tracking system means you won’t need external sensors to track your moves.

This is great if you don’t want to spend a day preparing your room for tracking.

Expert Opinion:

best vr headset to watch movies Sony PlayStation VR

If you already own a PlayStation 4, then this VR headset should be at the top of your list.

Watching movies on the PS VR will enhance your movie-viewing experiences to a whole new level.

Whether you want to watch normal movies, VR movies, or 360 videos, this should be your first VR headset to plug into your PS4.

Tech Specs

The PlayStation VR comes with a 5.7-inch OLED display that easily projects 1080p movies and presents them as intended… with true blacks and crystal-clear colors.

The resolution is 960 x 1080 per eye, which isn’t the greatest but it will be good enough to serve you well.

When watching VR and 3D movies you won’t be disappointed.

The extremely high frame rate, higher than most headsets here, will keep any possible motion sickness at bay.

A high refresh rate also means you’ll have an enhanced experience when watching anything with a lot of motion, for instance, shows about wildlife, and sports!

Since Hulu has a good deal of both of those categories, this makes the PSVR one of the top choices for Hulu.

Especially if you’re a big sports-junkie. The more frames per second in a boxing match, basketball game, football game… the more fluid all the motions will be!

If you’re looking to watch some sports in VR, and you want the feeling of really being ringside, courtside, or centerfield… the PSVR might be the best VR Headset in 2020 for you.

You will also see a nice boost to your normal movies when watching them on the unit.

The LED’s around the PlayStation VR headset, the Dualshock 4 wireless controller, and the PlayStation Move motion controller work in unison with the PlayStation Camera to provide an incredible precise capture of your natural movements in virtual reality space.

Keep in mind that the PlayStation Camera is sold separately, but definitely worth the investment if your main goal is watching movies on this VR headset.

Audio Specs

Included with the PlayStation VR is something called 3D Audio Technology that means you’ll be able to pinpoint sounds above, below, and all around you.

This is similar to Dolby Surround Sound on steroids!

You’ll find yourself instinctively turning your head at the sound of footsteps when watching your favorite VR horror movie.

It provides a very immersive movie experience.

Battery Life

The PlayStation VR is another tethered VR headset for watching movies, but this time you’ll be stuck to your PS4 instead of your desktop or laptop.

If this is not an issue, which it shouldn’t be for watching a 90-minute to 2 hour movie, then the convenience of not having to check battery life will be worth it.

Features and Benefits

  • The only VR headset you should consider if you already have a Sony PlayStation 4.

  • 3D Audio technology easily blows away its competition in the same price range.

  • Sony has a wide array of VR movies and video experiences to choose from that rivals any Oculus marketplace offerings.

Pros

Cons

User Experience:

Let’s hear what PSVR’s buyers on Amazon have to say about it.

1) It’s a nice product for those of us who can’t invest in a gaming PC.
Make sure you have enough space in your living room when you want to play.
Follow the installation guide for the best experience.

2) It’s not really immersive.
The picture seems out of focus.
A round border can be seen around the lenses.
It makes you feel like you’re looking through tubes.

3) As a glass wearer, I can’t recommend this to you.
This wasn’t an issue with Oculus headsets.
Picture is so blurry.

4) It’s an interesting device.
The problem is that there’s not nearly enough games supported by it on PlayStation.
It’s good for those who don’t mind spending a bit more for a new hobby, but it’s not a must-have for all PlayStation users.

5) If you’ve considered buying a VR headset but don’t have too much to spend, this is the best thing you can buy.

6) This is an international product, yet it doesn’t come with an Australian plug.

The product has arrived, but we won’t be able to use it for this Christmas

Expert Opinion:

best vr headset to watch movies Valve Index

Now, the Valve Index is often thought of as just an incredible gaming VR Headset. But the Index can be amazing for watching movies and all sorts of videos as well!

This is a pricier option and also a tethered option. So, you’ll need to have a PC powerful enough to handle everything the Valve Index asks of it.

But you may be wowed by all that it does… and tossing down a G might be a sound investment in your eyes.

Tech Specs

The Valve Index uses an LCD screen with a resolution of 1440 x 1600 per eye.

So, some people may prefer the OLED experience for movies, but if you want those extra subpixels and those bright whites that come with LCD, you may want to consider the Index.

And that resolution is fantastic. That’s going to give you such detail in the images you see all around you. And when I say all around you… I mean all around you!

A big advantage of the Valve Index is the fact that it can reach up to 130 degrees for the field of view. This is all done without sacrificing those crisp and clear images.

There will be no distortion, no compromise. Just a fantastic field of view allowing you to have added peripherals, really simulating a lifelike experience.

You’ll have an added advantage watching a horror movie if the killer sneaks up alongside you.

Like the PSVR, the Valve Index also excels in the area of refresh rate.

120 Hz for a refresh rate ties the PSVR but the Index also has an experimental mode of 144Hz.

That’s the best you’re going to get from any VR headset.

If you’re someone who’s extremely worried about motion sickness, then the Valve Index might be the best VR headset to watch movies.

It keeps the lowest latency and eradicates any chance of motion sickness.

Currently, the Valve Index does not seem to be able to stream from Hulu, if it ever does, you Hulu users may want to watch out!

Any other videos you may be interested in watching that have a lot of motion, i.e. sports, wildlife shows, etc. the Valve Index is a top pick for that.

The Valve Index is a comfortable fit for most, though it does weigh 809 grams. If a heavy headset doesn’t bother you, then no need to worry there.

Audio Specs

The audio experience from the Valve Index is top notch.

They really wanted to make sure you were as immersed as you could be in your VR experience and left no stone unturned in that quest.

You will experience sound as naturally as you possibly can. The speakers in the headset don’t touch your ears.

So, there won’t be headphones you wear that become cumbersome and make it feel as if the sound is coming from inside your head.

No… the sound will be coming from all around you in a fantastic 360-degree surround sound fashion.

Start up your favorite epic movie in VR and with all the surrounding noises you encounter, you’ll think you’re on the battlefield!

Battery Life

The Valve Index is tethered, so you won’t have to worry about battery.

All you’ll have to worry about is the PC you’re attached to.

Whether you’re watching a shorter video or a long movie, you won’t need to be checking battery life halfway through. You’re going to be all set.

Features and Benefits

  • Best refresh rate available on this list, fantastic for those prone to motion sickness.

  • Audio experience is top-notch for those who have found other VR Headsets to fall short in this area

Pros

Cons

User Experience:

And here’s just a few of Valve Index’s user reviews on Amazon.

1) It’s a fantastic headset with great FOV, pixel density, and build quality.
However, make sure you don’t buy from scalpers because it’s going to cost you a lot more.

2) Controllers have clicking issues.
But the headset is just 10/10 and has no issues at all.
Thanks to Amazon, you can get this in countries that Valve doesn’t ship to.

3) As expected, the quality and packaging are stellar.
It’s what Valve is known for after all!
Games run perfectly out of the box with no need for mapping keys.

4) It broke off after a few months.
Speakers aren’t always working.
Hope the seller can get us a new replacement.

5) The quality of the optics and the headset itself is amazing.
Playing VR games on this is just something else.
You owe it to yourself to jump into VRChat once you get this.

6) The price is inflated.

Can’t recommend it right now unless you get it at the MSRP.

Expert Opinion:

best vr headset for watching movies Samsung HMD Odyssey+ for OLED and LCD

One more tethered option is the Samsung HMD Odyssey+. This is a great VR Headset to consider for many reasons.

It delivers an excellent experience to you, and though you’ll require a PC to power it, it’s much cheaper than a lot of other headsets here.

Tech Specs

One important thing to note right off that bat, is the refresh rate.

As previously mentioned, you will need a PC that’s powerful enough in order to operate the Odyssey. You will require certain specs.

There is a minimum requirement that can be met, but if you are just at the minimum requirements, you may only be getting a 60Hz refresh rate out of the Odyssey.

60Hz is right at the threshold of preventing motion sickness… but just barely.

However, if your PC is an even more powerful one, you can actually achieve a 90Hz refresh rate, which is much better!

That makes a big difference and will have you experience a much lower latency, so it may be worth checking out.

You get a resolution of 1440 x 1600 per eye, which is a common resolution you’ll see among many options here.

And it’s common for good reason… that’s a great resolution to have. Plenty of pixels to deliver detailed images in your favourite movies!

And the display is OLED. You know what that means! Deep blacks, vivid colors, the works!

The cones and rods in your eyes will be pleased at the variety of colors they’re absorbing and the magnificent hues thrown at you.

Throw on some of James Cameron’s Avatar for an impeccable Blue Fest!

Now, most times when you hear which display you’re getting, OLED or LCD, you can instantly figure out what the downside will be.

Generally, OLEDs can have much less protection from the pesky screen door effect than LCDs.

Samsung, very intelligently, incorporated Anti-Screen-Door technology and implemented it within the OLED.

So, you won’t have to worry about the possibility of some unknown, barely visible, barrier holding you back from the ultimate real experience. Nothing will be separating you from the Na’vi of Pandora!

If you’re unsure which choice to make between OLED and LCD and find yourself wanting a little of both… then the Odyssey may be your best choice of VR headset to watch movies.

The Odyssey also has a great 110-degree field of view, which is on par with several other great headsets on this list.

The adjustable headband is made with comfortable materials and the overall comfort of the Odyssey is quite nice!

They’ve made it 10% lighter, though it does still weigh about 590 grams. Not as heavy as a couple other options on the list… but closer to the heavier side of the whole spectrum.

Need to take a peek around the room and don’t feel like pulling the whole headset off?

This headset doesn’t feature any flip-up goggles… but it does have a ‘Flashlight Mode’ so you can toggle back and forth between your virtual movie and real life.

Audio Specs

Samsung has incorporated premium AKG headphones that are built right into the headset. These will provide you with 360-degree surrounding audio.

Every twig snapping in the forest scene around you, and every monster roar in your area, will emanate perfectly from the intended direction.

Although, there is no headphone jack, so you cannot swap in your own headphones if you so desired.

Make sure the headphones that come with the Odyssey are what you’d want, as they’re your only option. As long as they are, you’re golden!

Battery Life

The Samsung HMD Odyssey+ is tethered, so battery life won’t be a concern of yours.

Just make sure you have a PC with all the required specs and you’re good to go. You won’t need to worry yourself about the length of your movies, you’ll be able to watch them in full.

Features and Benefits

  • You get the advantages of OLED, without so many of the disadvantages. You’ll get protection from screen door effect as if it were an LCD.

  • Great resolution and refresh rate at a much lower price than a lot of the competition.

Pros

Cons

User Experience:

Here are a few examples of what users on Amazon think about this device.

1) Purchased during the promo.
The headset has multiple improvements since the last iteration.
It’s a must-buy if you get an offer for it.

2) It works with SteamVR.
This means if you play lots of Oculus or Vive games, you won’t have any issues getting more content for your headset.

3) The packaging was a little disappointing.
It was too bland and simple.
The cheap plastic shield on the front is also not a great sign on a $500 headset.

4) The controllers might be the worst part of this product.
Everything else from the Windows VR software to the headset itself is just great.
There’s literally nothing bad to say about the audio quality.

5) A real letdown.

The left controller had issues and didn’t turn on.

Refunded.

6) The tracking is poor.
Visuals are better when compared to Oculus Rift, but what’s the point if you can’t play the game properly due to bad tracking?

Expert Opinion:

Best VR Headset to Watch Movies (2021) — Buyers Guide

The first thing to consider before buying a VR headset for watching movies is obviously your budget

The second point you want to think about is if you already have one of the following:

A powerful graphics card in your PC, a PlayStation, a current Samsung Smartphone, and/or a good screen resolution on your smartphone.

If you fall into any of these categories, it should give you a starting point with your VR headset purchase.

If you have none of these, you will need to invest in more gear before concerning yourself with a VR headset.

Or… you could go the route of getting a standalone VR headset… meaning you don’t need any extra gear. The headset is all-inclusive!

Finally, you should have some idea of what kind of movies you have an affinity for.

Are you a 3D movie buff?

Are you looking for an ultimate cinema-like experience?

Do you prefer true virtual reality immersion?

Do you simply want to watch 2D movies in a more enhanced way?

Are you the type to have long-lasting movie marathons?

Do you tend to only have the attention span for one short movie a day?

Getting this sorted before making a buying decision will ensure that you chose the right VR headset for your particular movie fetish.

Below, are the 21 most popular questions I came across during my search for the best VR headset for watching movies.

After reading this you should have a shortlist of which VR headset you will purchase to get a better movie watching experience.

So let’s get started…

What is the best VR headset for an ultimate immersive cinema-like 4K experience?

It is definitely the Goovis Pro, the ultimate portable personal immersive 4K cinema to replace home theater, your smartphone, tablet or TV for an unprecedented cinema-like experience with a long 4.5h battery life!

Stream YouTube, Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime videos or connect your gaming system and immerse yourself from your PS4 to the Nintendo Switch.

What is the best VR headset for movie watching on Netflix?

Hands down the Oculus Quest is the best headset to watch Netflix movies.

Many of the VR headsets I tested and reviewed can give you access to a Netflix app on their respective platform.

The best VR headset to watch Netflix movies comes down to processing power and compatibility.

Simply turn on your Oculus Quest, install the free Netflix app and you are ready to go (assuming you have an active Netflix subscription).

You can also choose to watch Netflix VR movies while offline following this manual.

What are the best VR headsets for watching Movies on Hulu platform?

Like the above answer, a solid choice would be the Oculus Quest.

And I would choose that if you didn’t already have a PlayStation, as the Quest is a standalone headset and requires nothing else.

However, if you already have a PlayStation, or if you’ve been considering getting one and wouldn’t mind purchasing one… then choose the PSVR.

Not only it is a great option anyway and can handle movies through the Hulu app quite well, it has the added advantage of its high refresh rate.

And if you’re someone who wants to experience all that Hulu has to offer, the high refresh rate is an excellent and important detail.

Hulu offers many videos where there is a lot of action and motion, like sports and wilderness shows, and the higher the refresh rate, the better and more fluid it will all look.

What is the best VR headset to watch movies with Google WorldSense?

The best VR headset for watching movies with Google WorldSense is the Lenovo Mirage Solo.

What is the best movie watching VR headset for PlayStation 4?

The best VR headset for watching movies with your PlayStation is the PlayStation VR.

What Oculus headset features the latest technologies?

The most recent release from Oculus is the GOOVIS Pro and Oculus Quest

What is the best PC-powered VR headset to watch movies?

The best PC connected VR headset for watching movies is the Oculus Rift S.

What is the best VR headset for movie watching if I’m concerned with motion sickness?

A lot of newcomers to VR are worried about motion sickness. Some people just know themselves very well and know they are prone to it.

The PSVR, especially if you have a PlayStation, and the Valve Index, especially if you have a powerful PC, are the best choices.

Both have high refresh rates and will alleviate your concerns of motion sickness as that will be the last thing from your mind

The PSVR operates at a 120Hz refresh rate. The Valve Index does as well… but can run on 144Hz in an experimental mode, meaning it is the ultimate best choice for those that fear a queasy stomach.

What headset should I choose for watching movies if I want advantages from both OLED and LCD?

A lot of people feel it’s a real Sophie’s Choice between OLED and LCD. It can be a tough decision.

OLED is typically reviewed as being better for movies with the deep and true blacks and the vivid colors that truly pop!

But some people worry about the lack of brightness and the possible screen door effect that takes you right out the experience.

These can be experienced with OLED but are things you don’t have to worry about with LCD.

So, which do you choose?

How about the Samsung HMD Odyssey+?

Yes, it’s an OLED so you get all of those advantages. But they also implemented Anti-Screen-Door Technology for those of you that feel like you’re missing out on the advantages of an LCD.

Of all the screens on all the options, the Odyssey feels like it brings the most to the table.

In terms of displays, this appears to be the one with the least amount of drawbacks.

Which movie watching VR headset has the best field of view?

If you look through this list, you’ll notice the best field of view belongs to the Valve Index.

Many options have an excellent 110-degree field of view that you’ll love. The Index can give you 130 degrees. The extra 20 degrees really does make a difference.

If you want the immersion to be taken to the next level… don’t forget about your peripherals! Emulating your field of view as closely as possible will really have you feeling like you’re in the movie!

You’ll be able to see the action to the right and to the left of you more easily and with no distortion. That’s an added bonus!

What VR headset delivers the best audio for watching movies?

If you want great audio, well, you got some great options!

Both the HTC Vive Cosmos and HTC Vive Pro deliver fantastic audio experiences that you will be infatuated with.

Their noise-cancelling, high-quality audio is excellent.

But in my opinion, the one that goes past infatuation and which you will fall in love with, is the audio experience of the Valve Index.

The slightly off-ear speakers will produce realistic audio environments for your movie watching, and listening, pleasure.

Of course, those are all tethered option.

And if you’re looking for a standalone solution, you can’t go wrong with the Oculus Quest.

Excellent audio and the flexibility to plug in your own headphones if you wish.

What is the lightest VR Headset to watch movies?

Technically the lightest is the Google Cardboard… and then you would have to factor in the weight of your phone.

But if you want the lightest standalone options available… then those would be the two headsets from the GOOVIS.

The Goovis Pro and the Goovis G2 both weigh a mere 200 grams.

If you want something tethered because you already have a powerful PC and want that extra power, but still desire something light, then go with the HTC Vive Cosmos at just 470 grams.

What is the best VR Headset to watch movies while traveling?

This one may depend on exactly what kind of traveling you are doing.

The Oculus Go has a shorter battery life and is recommended to not be used while charging the battery.

It can last you around 2 hours, so say you have a 2-hour trip and want to watch a movie in that timespan, the Oculus Go is the cheapest option to accomplish that.

Is your trip going to be a little longer? Maybe you want some more movie-viewing time?

The Oculus Quest has a longer battery life, around 3 hours. Also, you can charge the battery while using it if you need to do so.

The Quest has measures in place to actively cool the headset for just that sort of thing.

Let’s say you just want more battery power and you really don’t want to have to worry about charging while watching your movies.

Both the GOOVIS G2 and the GOOVIS G2 Pro have battery life that lasts around 4.5 hours!

You could fly from New York to L.A., wait for the captain to approve use of electronics, order your drink, and then watch a few movies on one charge!

All that can be accomplished with just enough time left over to prepare for the descent over the Hollywood sign!

What is the most comfortable VR Headset for movies in 2021?

There are a few choices here. For you, the lighter the headset is, that may mean the more comfortable it is.

Both headsets from GOOVIS, the G2 and the Pro, are extremely light standalone options. Just 200 grams each and constructed in comfortable fashions so that you can wear them for hours and hours.

Though a bit heavier, the HTC Vive Cosmos and HTC Vive Pro are extremely comfortable tethered options.

If you’re looking for some power and looking to not worry about battery life with a tethered option… then the two headsets from HTC are ergonomically designed for your ultimate comfort!

What is the best VR Headset for movie watching in terms of VALUE?

For this question, I’d lean towards the Samsung HMD Odyssey+.

This option is on the cheaper side, especially among the tethered options. But you get a lot of fantastic qualities for the money you’re spending.

The Odyssey has one of the best solutions to the age-old display question… LCD or OLED? Using the OLED and Anti-Screen Door Technology you get a little bit of the best of both worlds.

It’s quite a comfortable option with a great resolution giving you sharp and clean images in your movie.

The audio provided is great and as long as your PC meets the correct standards, you’ll get the 90Hz refresh rate vs. the lesser 60Hz refresh rate.

What is the best VR Headset in 2021 for watching movies outside?

This is an interesting thought. If you want to hang out outside, enjoy some nice weather, get some sun, and watch a movie while you do so… you absolutely can!

To avoid the hassle, you’d want a standalone or something that goes along with your phone. If you already have a phone that would work with the Google Cardboard, that could be a great option.

But the GOOVIS G2 and GOOVIS G2 Pro might be the best options.

OLED screens to prevent any screen glare would be important if you’re outside on a sunny day… and long-lasting battery power means you could relax outside with your VR Headset for awhile on just one charge.

What is the best Movie-Watching VR Headset in 2021 for for those with sensitive eyes?

This is a large concern that many have. Not only do people experience eye fatigue or soreness in the eyes from every day regular TV-watching, computer-screen-staring, cell-phone-leering, etc.

Throw VR into the equation and your eyes could be taking a toll.

It’s another piece of technology to look at. Plus, with VR, it’s a whole new way of watching content that our eyes need time to adjust to.

The screen is extremely close to our eyes and that is something to be cautious of.

If you have sensitive eyes… perhaps you should go the route of an OLED over an LCD. OLED’s tend to be less bright so your eyes should feel less strained.

On top of that, both the GOOVIS G2 and the GOOVIS Pro boast excellent anti-glare OLED screens and brightness adjustment is available on the headset.

These will likely be your top choices for your eyes’ comfort!

What is the best overall VR headset to watch movies regardless of platform, device, or tethering?

As of this writing the best VR headset for watching movies is the Oculus Quest.

Which VR headset gives me the most immersive VR experience when watching a VR movie in 2021?

The most immersive VR headsets for watching movies in 2021 are the GOOVIS G2 Pro and the HTC Vive Pro that comes with 2 sensors and has ability to add additional sensors.

How do I watch VR movies on my iPhone?

Sadly Apple has been quiet in regards to VR programming on their iOS platform.

As of 2020, we may see more announcements regarding Mac compatibility for VR headsets, but nothing is forthcoming yet.

If you want to use your iPhone to watch VR movies, your best bet is to use the Google Cardboard along with YouTube for iOS app.

This will transform you iPhone into a VR headset using the dedicated cardboard button in the YouTube app.

Best VR Headset to Watch Movies (2021) — Conclusions

After reviewing all the 10 best VR headsets for watching movies and comparing each, I have to say there is a lot to be excited about.

VR technology will only get more immersive with future releases.

Sorting out the complexities is difficult, but not impossible.

If this is your first purchase of VR technology, base your purchase not only on cost, but also support from the market and the variety of movies you will have access to.

These days most VR headsets support some sort of Netflix app, but watching legacy movies should also be high on your list.

Regardless of what you choose, keep in mind watching movies and getting a true “cinema” experience can only happen in a theater with other humans.

With that said, there are many options for replicating this “community” experience with apps like Bigscreen.

Below are my suggestions that will help in your buying decision.

Here are my suggestions:

  • If you are looking for an immersive 4K cinema-like experience, your ultimate best personal theater headset is the GOOVIS Pro.

  • If you want the most up-to-date VR headset for watching movies, you should purchase the Oculus Quest.

  • If you just want to test the waters and dabble in watching movies on a VR headset and you have a smartphone, get the Google Cardboard.

  • If you already own a PlayStation 4, then go and purchase the PlayStation VR.

  • If you can’t afford the Oculus Quest but still want the same access and latest technology from Oculus, go purchase the Oculus Go.

  • If you don’t own a PlayStation 4, and you have the required specs on your laptop or desktop PC, and you have the budget, go and purchase the HTC Vive Pro or if you really have the budget, perhaps consider the Valve Index.

  • If you are looking for great value for your dollar, choose the Samsung HMD Odyssey+. You get a lot of great qualities for a price that won’t break the bank.

  • If you want to watch movies on Hulu and are interested in the large library of content they have with lots of action and movement, consider the PlayStation VR if you can.

If not and you have a PC that can handle a tethered option, the Oculus Rift S has a nice high refresh rate for that. And of course, the Oculus Quest is always a great choice and can give you an excellent Hulu viewing experience.

  • If it’s movie marathons you’re interested in… and cords you want to avoid… either the GOOVIS G2 or the GOOVIS Pro are fantastic choices.

No matter if it’s movie marathons or single movie viewings… or however you plan on viewing movies in VR… you got plenty of incredible options on this list!

    Good luck!
