Important to Know:

One great thing to note here, is that each model we’re going to review is available as an Indoor or Outdoor option.

Additionally, each option can be Natural Gas or Propane.

Not too much changes from one option to another.

Here, I have provided only the links to the indoor versions for each model, using either natural gas or propane. You can easily find the outdoor version on Amazon.

But again, choose whichever combination you like. You can go with any of the four combinations involving indoor, outdoor, natural gas, or propane for all models.

For instance: The V65 is called the V65iN when indoor; natural gas.

The V65iP, when indoor; propane.

The V65eN, when outdoor; natural gas.

And, the V65eP, when outdoor; propane.

This is the same for all models with the one exception of the RUS/RUCS line. The RUCS75iN is the indoor; natural gas option.

The RUCS75iP is the indoor; propane option. And then there is the RUS75eN for the outdoor; natural gas option. And the RUS75eP for the outdoor; propane option.

Best Rinnai Tankless Water Heater for 2021

1. Rinnai V65 | Best on a Budget for Smaller Home

best rinnai tankless water heater Rinnai V65

From Rinnai’s V Series, we have the V65. With an Energy Efficient Rating between 0.79 and 0.82, you’re on the low end in terms of what other Rinnai tankless heaters can offer, but still not bad.

The V series is not Energy Star Qualified, so it isn’t going to save energy by emitting less greenhouse gases, nor will it save you money in its operation.

However, on the initial purchase, you will be saving yourself money with the V65, as it only costs roughly about $680.

The estimated yearly energy cost is about $482.00. And the domestic hot water flow rate is 6.5 GPM (meaning 6.5 gallons per minute).

You’ll notice this is the lowest amount of all the heaters we’re reviewing, but if small and affordable suits your situation perfectly, then this could be the best Rinnai tankless water heater for you.

The High-Efficiency V65 has a 10,300 BTU minimum, and 150,000 BTU maximum and it works fine for 2 to 4 fixtures.

Unfortunately, you don’t get recirculation technology nor is the V65 Wi-Fi ready.

The indoor models have dimensions of 9.27in x 26.9in x 14.04in while the outdoor models have dimensions of 9.6in x 24.3in x 14.04in (depth, height, width).

The weight of the indoor models is 45.6lbs. and the outdoor models clock in at 43.6lbs.

These compact and lightweight tankless water heaters are reliable options at a fantastic value, and best suited for small to medium-sized new homes or remodels.

2. Rinnai V94 | Best on a Budget for Larger Home

best rinnai tankless water heater Rinnai V94

Still in Rinnai’s V Series, we move up to the V94. This too, has an Energy Efficient Rating between 0.79 and 0.82. Yes, the low end of Rinnai’s tankless water heaters, but no, not bad among other options out there.

This model is also not Energy Star Qualified as it’s in the V series. Once again, not saving you energy, not emitting less greenhouse gases, and won’t be saving you money in the long run.

However, this is a cheaper option among most Rinnai heaters. More expensive than the V65, at about $975.00 but still quite cheap.

And also, you’re going up from 6.5 GPM to 9.8 GPM. So, you’re able to get a good deal more hot water per minute.

This model’s usable for 3 to 5 fixtures. Great for a slightly more crowded household.

This High-Efficiency V94 has a 10,300 BTU minimum, and 199,000 BTU maximum, so it’s more powerful than the last model.

It also has an estimated yearly energy cost of about $480.

Unfortunately, no recirculation technology nor is it Wi-Fi ready.

The dimensions of these models match the models of the V65. Indoor models measuring at 9.27in x 26.9in x 14.04in while the outdoor models have dimensions of 9.6in x 24.3in x 14.04in (depth, height, width).

The weight of these models is a tad heavier than the last. 46.3lbs. for the indoor model and the outdoor models are still quite low 44.3lbs.

Once again, this is a great choice for small to medium-sized new homes or remodels.

Perhaps a better fit for those needing a bit more hot water per minute, especially if your household tends to be running multiple appliances at once

Pros

Cons

3. Rinnai RL75

best rinnai tankless water heater Rinnai RL75

Moving on to the RL series, the high-efficiency RL75.

The RL Series is also not Energy Star Qualified, but the Energy Efficient Rating is a bit more consistent at 0.81 – 0.82 range.

You won’t be saving money or saving energy in the long run with this model, but upfront you will definitely save some money.

At just about $900, you save a pretty penny with the immediate purchase. And with a nice 7.5 GPM you’re getting a good amount of hot water per minute.

The RL75 has a 10,300 BTU minimum, and 180,000 BTU maximum. Not quite as powerful as the V94, but a good deal more powerful than the V65.

You can use this model for 2 to 4 fixtures comfortably, no worries there. And it has an estimated yearly energy cost of about $480.

The indoor models have dimensions of 9.27in x 26.9in x 14.04in and the outdoor models have dimensions of 9.6in x 24.3in x 14.04in (depth, height, width).

The weight of the indoor models is 45.6lbs. and the outdoor models weigh 43.6lbs. For the same size and weight as the V65, you’re getting quite a lot more for not much more of a cost.

Indeed, it could be the best small tankless water heaters in 2020, especially for colder climates to support multiple appliances.

The RL75 is Circ-Logic Capable meaning you can make an extra purchase for the pump and you can have the best re-circulation technology to keep the warm water flowing everywhere!

And it comes Wi-Fi ready. Want to tell your phone when you’re ready to take a nice, hot shower to get it started?

Yes, we live in that futuristic reality with the RL75.

Cons

4. Rinnai RL94

best rinnai tankless water heater Rinnai RL94

Keeping in the RL series, we move up to the RL94. Yes, you’ll increase your GPM from 7.5 to 9.8.

Now, that’s a good amount of hot water. Expect more hot water per minute, and if you need a bit more of a range than just 2 to 4 fixtures, the RL94 is suited well for 3 to 5 fixtures.

Choose this option for a slightly bigger house than what you’d use the RL75 for.

And shall we talk about power? The high-efficiency RL94 has a 10,300 BTU minimum, and 199,000 BTU maximum.

And it has an estimated yearly energy cost of about $480.

Matching the V94 in size and weight, indoor models measuring at 9.27in x 26.9in x 14.04in while the outdoor models have dimensions of 9.6in x 24.3in x 14.04in (depth, height, width).

And the indoor model weighs 46.3lbs. and the outdoor models are still quite low 44.3lbs.

Limitless hot water to multiple showers, perhaps even a washing machine, all at the same time, you probably already love the sound of the RL94.

It’s also Circ-Logic Capable, so with the extra purchase of the pump, your re-circulation technology gets even better.

And it’s Wi-Fi Ready. Welcome to the future, let your phone make your hot water needs as easy on you as possible.

All these advantages do come at a bit of a price. The RL94 costs roughly about $1,290, so it’s more than the previous options, but it has a lot to offer.

Pros

Cons

5. Rinnai RUS75 / RUCS75

best rinnai tankless water heater Rinnai RUS75 RUCS75

Now onto the RUCS series, which applies to the indoor models.

RUS series applies to the corresponding outdoor models in this scenario.

The RUCS75 is going to give you a nice 7.5 GPM for some pretty hot water flow per minute. For this size and model, you’ll definitely be good with 2 to 4 fixtures.

In terms of the power, the RUCS75 has a 10,300 BTU minimum, and 160,000 BTU maximum. So, the maximum is not as powerful as another 7.5 GPM model, the RL75.

Additionally, this series is not Circ-Logic Capable, so you don’t get the most advanced circulation technology.

Also, the RUCS series is not Wi-Fi ready. Sorry, you won’t be able to notify your phone of your upcoming showers.

And the price for this model is around $899.  So, it’s a bit more expensive on the initial purchase than the RL75.

But how about some advantages that come with this option? Well, all of the previous models under the V series and RL series have used Non-Condensing technology.

For this RUCS series (and all the following series that will be reviewed), I’ll be talking about the incorporated Condensing technology.

To attempt to put it simply, Non-Condensing units, means they are exhausting extremely hot gases, thus wasting energy that could be used to heat water.

Condensing units are exhausting gases that are not nearly as hot, saving more energy to heat the water.

Boil it all down, better use of energy, and more energy efficient.

Though the RUCS series isn’t Energy Star Qualified, it does have a much better Energy Efficient Rating of 0.85 – 0.90.

You’ll be using energy more wisely with this model and you’ll be saving yourself some money in the long run.

And it has an estimated yearly energy cost of about $420. You’ll notice that’s a good deal less than the previous options.

With these models, you’ll be working with slightly larger and heavier models. Not so much that you need a massive amount of extra room, but something to note.

Both indoor and outdoor models weigh 57.3 lbs. The depth, height and weight for the indoor model are 10.1in x 31.1in x 18.5in and for the outdoor 10.5in x 27.0in x 18.5in.

Pros

Cons

6. Rinnai RU130 | Best Overall & Most Efficient for Smaller Home

best rinnai tankless water heater Rinnai RU130

On to the RU series. We begin with the RU130. Now, the numbers in the models up until this point, have been fairly telling as to what the GPM would be.

But be wary, they are not the exact indicator of GPM. The RU130 has a 7 GPM, which is a decent amount. More than the V65, just shy of the RL75 and RUCS75. Still good for a home with 2 to 4 fixtures.

For this model, you’ll have a 15,000 BTU minimum, and 130,000 BTU maximum.

Now, this is the lowest maximum we’ve seen in power for any model so far, but the minimum is higher than any we’ve seen as well. That’s good to know in case you need your minimum to be operating as powerfully as possible.

The depth, height and weight for the indoor model are 11.45in x 31.3in x 18.5in and for the outdoor models are 12.0in x 27.9in x 18.5in.

And both models weigh 62 lbs. So, they’re bigger than all the previous models.

The main differences if comparing to the last model reviewed, the RUCS75, would be that it’s deeper and heavier.

Again, it’s not going to take up that much more space, so you’ll likely have room for this model if you had room for the last model.

And now, we finally have come to a series that is Energy Star Qualified!

You save energy, fewer greenhouse gases, better for the environment… and you’ll save money!

The Condensing technology helps the Energy Efficient Rating to be 0.91 – 0.93 for the RU series.

And it has an estimated yearly energy cost of about $320. Yowzers! That’s over $100 in the drop from the last model to this one. You can see that adding up to big savings over the years.

The RU130 is Circ-Logic Capable and Wi-Fi ready. Great hot water circulation is moments away.

And trigger it to begin with the help of your phone. For about $1,270, this model offers quite a lot to you.

Pros

Cons

7. Rinnai RU160

best rinnai tankless water heater Rinnai RU160

Staying in the RU series and moving up to the RU160 with 9 GPM for your hot water flow rate.

You’ll also have 15,000 BTU minimum, and 160,000 BTU maximum.

With that nice step up for gallons per minute of hot water and a good step up in power, take this model for the likes of a home with 2 to 5 fixtures you want serviced.

This is another choice that gives you Condensed technology, thus resulting in an Energy Efficient Rating of 0.91 – 0.93 range and making it Energy Star Qualified!

A choice that’s better for the environment, saving you energy, and ultimately, saving you money.

And it has an estimated yearly energy cost of about $480. A bit higher, but for everything you get for this medium-sized home model, it ranks pretty well.

Amazingly, the upgrade from the RU130 to RU160, doesn’t mean the model is any bigger or heavier!

The indoor models are 11.45in x 31.3in x 18.5in and for the outdoor models, you have 12.0in x 27.9in x 18.5in. And both models weigh 62 lbs.

Since you’re still in the RU series, you have a model that’s Circ-Logic Capable so you’ll get fantastic hot water circulation through your house and to multiple locations at once.

Pair that with the 9 GPM and you’re in pretty good shape with a medium-sized house and perhaps even a larger home.

And you’ll still be Wi-Fi ready with this model.

Need to get the shower ready for yourself? Or for the kids? Maybe you need to get the shower ready for the kids and yourself?

Let your smart devices help you out with that. You don’t even need to get off the couch if you’re just getting a shower ready for someone else in the house!

All this for around $1,39! It’s a bit heftier of an initial price tag, but again, you save money in the long run.

And you’ll save yourself having to give more effort than is needed with some amazing futuristic technology that Rinnai has put in place for you.

Pros

Cons

8. Rinnai RU199 | Overall Best for Larger Home

best rinnai tankless water heater Rinnai RU199

And now, top of the line in the RU series, the RU199. With a whopping 11 GPM and 15,000 BTU minimum, and 199,000 BTU maximum, the power and hot water flow rate for this model are off the charts.

Use this model for your nice big home, suitable for 3 to 6 fixtures. Running multiple appliances with the RU199 can be done with ease.

And just like the RU130 and RU160, the dimensions of this power-house are the same!

The indoor models are 11.45in x 31.3in x 18.5in and the outdoor models are 12.0in x 27.9in x 18.5in. Impressively, they only weigh 2 more lbs. at 64 lbs.

This model has the Condensing technology that helps to give you a nice Energy Efficient Rating of 0.91 – 0.93.

And it’s Energy Star Qualified. So, you’re making an energy-conscious decision with this purchase, keeping the environment in mind… and also keeping your wallet in mind.

And it has an estimated yearly energy cost of about $480. That’s the same as the RU160 before it with more power and a higher GPM, so that’s quite efficient!

Though, you will pay around $1,660 initially for the RU199, you save money in the long run with this choice. The more you use it, the more you save.

And the Circ-Logic Technology is ready for you to install with the purchase of the extra pump. Keep the hot water circulating as best as it can be.

And Wi-Fi ready means you can prep the dishwasher, prep the washing machine, prep anything hot-water-related… all with your device of choosing.

Use voice activation if you don’t even feel like grabbing your device. Rinnai makes it easy on you.

Pros

Cons

9. Rinnai RUR199 | Most Energy Efficient for Larger Home

best rinnai tankless water heater Rinnai RUR199

And here we come to the Rolls Royce of the Rinnai series (maybe that’s what all the R’s stand for), the RUR199 is the top of the line in the RUR series.

Just like the RU199, this model has 11 GPM hot water flow rate, so the hot water will never stop flowing!

A powerful 15,000 BTU minimum, and 199,000 BTU maximum, so that will never be a problem.

And this model also uses Condensing technology, like the last few models reviewed.

Even the dimensions of its size are the same. The indoor models are 11.45in x 31.3in x 18.5in and the outdoor models are 12.0in x 27.9in x 18.5in.

Though, this one has packed on a few more pounds comparatively. Weighing in at 73 lbs.

The RUR series is also Energy Star Qualified, but what you’ll really love is the top of the line and more consistent Energy Efficient Rating of 0.93.

It’s the most efficient with energy, it’s going to be the best choice for the environment, and it will save the most money in the long run. And it has an estimated yearly energy cost of about $480.

The first purchase, of course will run you quite a bit, about $2,010. But the more you use it, the more you save.

And this is a fantastic choice for a big house, use it with 3 to 6 fixtures, multiple appliances running at once.

The RUR199 might be the best Rinnai tankless water heater for your home, if it’s a big home with lots of people running multiple appliances at once.

This model can take on the heavy loads your family will throw at it.

And perhaps the best features of the models in this series, not only is it Wi-Fi ready, it’s Control-R Wi-Fi included.

And the built-in 360 circulation technology means you don’t need anything else. You purchase the RUR199, and you already have everything you need.

Use voice activation on your phone to tell it to start the hot water for your shower… or maybe just tell your phone you found the best tankless water heater out there, because it does everything you need it to.

Best Rinnai Tankless Water Heater (2021) — Buyers Guide

There you go, Rinnai has a lot to offer! And they’ve done a great job of creating such a varying line of products. Surely, one or more of these models, can fit your situation perfectly.

I’ve reviewed and discussed 9 fantastic products in detail, so now we just need to break those details down a bit.

Let’s relate those details to your every day life. To your specific wants and needs.

You may still have some questions after reading all that information about Rinnai’s incredible line of tankless water heaters.

Let’s put all that information to good use. Let’s simplify it as best as we can.

We’ll go over some frequently asked questions that people have when looking to buy Rinnai tankless water heaters.

In doing so, we’ll make sure to cover any possible questions you may have and also, any questions you may not have even realized that you needed to know the answer to.

I’ll make sure to cover plenty of general situations people may find themselves in when looking for a tankless water heater and also some more specific and unique scenarios.

Let’s cover all the bases so there’s no stone left unturned. That way you’ll feel confident in picking out the best Rinnai tankless water heater for your home, big or small; indoor or outdoor; cheap or expensive.

What’s the cheapest Best Rinnai tankless water heater?

The V65 are the cheapest.

And you’ll still get a great model for your small to medium-sized home with these choices.

What’s the best Rinnai tankless water heater if I want to save money in the long run?

The best choice is certainly the RUR199 as it’s the most energy efficient.

What’s the best Rinnai tankless water heater if I want to save money in the long run and I have a smaller home?

The RU130 is the best energy efficient choice for small homes wanting the most efficient use of energy.

It’s Energy Star Qualified and its super high efficiency will save you bundles over time.

If I have a small home and want to save some money over time but I also don’t want to spend a lot of money up front, then what’s the best Rinnai tankless water heater for me?

In the previous question, the RU130 was the best choice. If the price tag of about $1,270 seems too high of an initial cost, then I would consider the RUCS75.

This line is not Energy Star Qualified; however, it does use Condensing technology so the Energy Efficient Rating is still high 0.85 – 0.90 (vs. the 0.91 – 0.93 of the RU130), which is still going to save you some coins.

This model only costs about $890. And instead of the 7 GPM with the RU130, you’ll get 7.5 GPM here!

What’s the best value Rinnai tankless water heater for my large home?

This depends on exactly what you mean by best value.

If you want the best value over time, choose the RUR199. It is the most energy efficient model and perfectly suited for a large home.

It costs about $2,010 initially, but it comes with the 360 circulation technology and Wi-Fi already built-in and set up.

If you care less about the circulation technology and Wi-Fi being pre-installed and may or may not decide to install them later on, and prefer to have a better value immediately, the RU199 with the same 11 GPM and same power, is almost as efficient, and costs only about $1,660.

And it’s perfectly suited for your large home.

What’s the best value Rinnai tankless water heater for my smaller home?

I would choose the RUCS75. Great fit for a smaller home, not Energy Star Qualified but uses Condensing technology and is quite efficient with energy.

Doesn’t have advanced recirculation technology and isn’t Wi-Fi ready, but costs just about $900.

What’s the best value Rinnai tankless water heater for my smaller home if I need Wi-Fi?

The best value right away would be the RL75.

The best value over time, the RU130 at about $1,280, but Condensing technology vs. Non-Condensing and Energy Star Qualified means it’s much more efficient with energy.

What’s the best Rinnai tankless water heater if I want something cheap but that also has Wi-Fi support?

I’d look to the RL line. Though not as efficient, the initial cost is cheaper than those in the RU or RUR line and still have Wi-Fi.

The RL75 is about $850, is Wi-Fi ready and has 7.5 GPM.

Comparatively, the RU130 with 7 GPM and Wi-Fi ready is about $1,280. That’s the cheaper option for the smaller home.

For a larger home, the RL94 is Wi-Fi ready, touts 9.8 GPM, and costs about $1,295.

Compare that to the RU160, also Wi-Fi ready, has 9 GPM, and costs about $1,390.

In both options, the RL model is cheaper and even boasts a higher GPM!

What’s the cheapest Rinnai tankless water heater for a large home?

If 9.8 GPM can get the job done in your large home, then choose the V94. It only costs about $975.

If you need more gallons of hot water per minute, say 11 GPM, then you only have two choices:

The cheaper option being the RU199 at about $1,660.

Pricier, but still about $350 cheaper than the other 11GPM option in the RUR199.

What’s the best Rinnai tankless water heater for simultaneous shower use?

The RUR series is the best line for that situation.

No matter what the ground water temperature is, the RUR series wins the battle.

Choose the RUR199 for the absolute best in this scenario.
